I usually don’t blog – but every now and then I like to remind everybody that I still listen to lots of music, I do leave the office and get to concerts and in case you have forgotten I have very definite opinions! The other night I went to see the French all-girl band the Plasticscines. I have to say, they are a lot of fun and they still have that raw edge evident in their first album that has me recalling the days of punk. Their manager, Maxime Schmitt has done a great job with the band, and performed live, their new songs such as Barcellona and Bitch are right on. I have to admit I find the “glam” bit to be a bit annoying. They don’t need it – if anything, I think it takes attention away from the raw edge, few chord- distorted guitar sound that brought me to them in the first place. As for the recorded CD and vid versions of songs from “On Love” – I bought the recorded versions ‘cause I do like the band, but I liked the live performance much better – http://www.myspace.com/plastiscine

Hello,

I’ve been trawling the internet this week on a variety of finding missions. It’s usually the way when I sit down to do some college work the thought comes “just let me just quickly look for …” and I’m off. It seems like my laptop takes on the persona of evil temptress, luring me into a seductive world of temptation and titillating trivia. For example I decided that I simply must find the Sasha at Universe 92 mixtape that I lost many years ago (to be fair it was a legendary acid house set and I found it pretty quickly-hurrah!).It also seemed of paramount importance to secure myself a vintage leopard print coat on good old eBay (well it is getting cold). In fact I even dyed my hair a rather bright shade of pink an extreme length to go to just to avoid writing an essay!

So as I’ve not been out much myself I have been voyeuristically keeping check on what’s going on out there in the real world-and it seems like I’m missing out on some quality gigs-boo! In fact, I’d go so far as to say this weekend has been like an indie music lovers wet dream with radio one’s champion of all things unsigned and under the radar Huw Stephens hosting Swn fest (swnfest.co.uk )in Wales, there’s also Oxjam a nationwide multi venue event on (a huge number of small intimate gigs),also my friends and ’ones to watch ’ of the summer Black Bloc (www.myspace.com/theblackbloc) had a gig in Bristol .Also very exciting is Wetdog are touring with The Slits-now that definitely is a wet dream for anyone with a liking for all female punk/post-punk and angular guitars (myspace.com/wetdogthebest ). Wetdog recently released their debut album Enterprise Reversal-it’s darkly melodic, bass line lead brilliance is a triumph of filthy distortion and unnerving sweetness.

Another truly independent woman is Maura Kennedy who has just released her self produced debut album’Parade of Echoes’ on which she not only sings but also plays most of the instruments. Maura is a songwriter and lyricist concerned with emotional depth and startling honesty. She takes joy in the melancholic and this album has a haunting beauty and timeless quality. It doesn’t fit neatly in to any genre fusing indie, folk, pop and rock in to ethereal harmonies and hooks. I’m intrigued to know what ‘The Thing With Feathers’ is I have an image of some weird but wonderful mythical beast ,like a griffin perhaps? Who knows but it inspired my favourite track on the album. Released in January 2010 or get it early at www.maurakennedy.com or www.reverbnation.com/MauraKennedy

I made my radio show (www.stroudfm.co.uk)about Heavenly records(www.heavenlyrecords.co.uk) this week home of Doves, St Etienne, Jay May,22-20s,The Magic Numbers, the little Ones, The Manics, the Vines ,Cherry Ghost and Flowered up. I personally love Heavenly (I worked there for a bit) and it was a real joy to make a show about them. I dedicated the show to Liam Maher lead singer of Flowered up who died this week aged 41. He was a lovely and talented man and will be sadly missed, though fondly remembered.

I’m so looking forward to finishing this darned essay and getting out next weekend to see some interesting looking bands at Walk The Line Festival(www.walkthelinefestival.co.uk)-I’m actually working for the radio BBC Gloucester Introducing show but who says business and pleasure don’t mix

Tunes that have been keeping me distracted this week:

Marmaduke Duke-Rubber Lover

Axwell (High Contrast mix)-I Found You

Maura Kennedy-The Thing with Feathers

Fever Ray (Tiga’s 1234 mix)-Triangle Walks

Flowered Up-It’s On

Take care

Hello people.

Well cerainly week is a long time here at HorizonVUMusic! I’ve got so much to tell you about including charter members and what they’ve been up to.Where to start?

Firstly I had a bit of a special show on www.stroudfm.co.uk this week I had the very lovely and extremely hardworking Stefan Edwards from Cheltenham’s own Festival Walk the Line-in to talk to me. He played me some great music by artists, local and international, who are set to descend on Cheltenham at the end of this month for a live music bonanza. More details at www.walkthelinefestival.co.uk I also Had Thrill Collins (Cheltenham’s best band!) In the studio doing their skiffle-ska covers of pop-tastic tunes-live! What jolly chaps they are (and I hear they’re going to get dressed up for their Halloween performance at Walk the Line).

Here’s a snapshot of what’s on my Jukebox this week,

My Top 5 tunes:

1) So HardPleasure-Mob http://www.myspace.com/pleasuremob

2) Run-Broadcast 2000 http://www.myspace.com/broadcast2000

3) Word-upThrill Collins http://www.myspace.com/thrillcollinsmusic

4) Get on your Bat -The Rusicles http://www.myspace.com/therusticles

5) Box No Locks- Mphohttp://www.myspace.com/mphosounds

And so to our charter members, and from one good time girl to another ….

I’ve just been watching Donna Marie’s great new video “Good Time Girl” shot at Cape Diem, Warrington by Craig Wetherall. It’s a real feel good vid and it definitely looks like they had a “Good Time” shooting it (for ya see what I did there? ) in fact it looks like a huge party-though I’m sure lots of hard work was involved too! Donna Marie is so hot right now and in 2009 started with a bang when she won the coveted title of BIGGEST SELLING ARTIST for Kerchoonz.com where she was invited to play a small and intimate set for the first ever LIVE SHOW KERCHOONZ with producer Ian Morrow ( Wet Wet Wet, Seal, Rod Stewart, Lisa Stansfield) at the House of Rock Studios Glasgow.

So do not take my word for it check it out for yourself:

Also I’m very excited to tell you our Charter Members – New York raucous rocker Bob Dee he’s gonna be featured in the November issue of Relix magazine and their song “We Are The Stars” will be on the CD compilation pull out-go Dee and Bob Petro! www.myspace.com / bobdeewithpetro

Personally I’m getting my knickers in a twist about Brendon Toller’s (photo left) new film ‘I Need That Record’ featuring one of my first ever figure of hero worship / teenage crush Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth). I bought the album ‘Dirty’ aged 13, and played it continuously, as loud as possible, much to the annoyance of my long-suffering Mum ( “Milly how can you listen to that racket?”). I still listen to it now, I never grew out of the need for filthy distorted guitars.

Anyway HorizonVUMusic is a sponsor showing the film in November at the Paris [TIME *]

Speaking of [TIME *] the independent music event in Paris this November, HVUM is an affiliate and we’re getting pretty excited about it. I’m going over to Paris so I can carry it all back to you! Well it’s a dirty job but someone’s got to do it (ahem).

I’ll be bringing you more details in the weeks to follow!

So before I spontaneously combust with excitement I’m going to go and listen to some sad music (maybe Interpol, The Horrors or Leonard Cohen?) To try and CALM DOWN!

Till next time,

Take Care

Hello! I’m Milly Moo, I am an avid supporter of the indie music scene. I’ve always been more than a bit obsessed with indie music (since saving my pocket money up to get a subscription to Melody Maker aged eleven). So that’s nearly twenty years of gig going, music press reading and trawling record shops, myspace and any other place I might happen across some cool little band or artist. My passion for music has taken me from the centre of the Bristol club scene in the hey day of drum and bass and trip hop to promoting bands on the art/rock dance/punk “oh so cool” scene in east london. Even when I tried to do something totally different and teach English as a foreign language, I ended up teaching a top record exec at Grammy Records Thailand-so I gave up fighting it and decided to throw myself into music in a big way. I got lot’s of experience working freelance in London, doing everything from A&R at an indie label to managing an all girl art punk band and even a dabble at DJing. But it wasn’t until I moved to sleepy little Stroud that I really found my niche when I started presenting and producing a weekly radio show all about Independent Record Labels. I loved it so much that I am now studying Radio Production at The University of Gloucestershire so I can really hone my skills. I’ve also been studying creative writing and write for a local paper. My musical tastes are wide and varied, in any given day I might listen to some Baille Funk followed by a bit of Shoe Gaze and maybe finish off with some classic rock or old school acid house-‘eclectic’ you could say!
I’m so excited to be a part of the HorizonVUMusic team and really look forward to hearing from you all-please send me music, videos and anything else you think will interest or excite me.
Take it easy,
Milly Moo

I went to Alan McGee’s(creation records) new club night last Saturday at Brixton Jamm(where Basement Jaxx first started out)-so I was expecting big things and certainly wasn’t disappointed. There were four bands playing and Sir McGee was spinning tunes in between. The night was opened by Shotgun Venus-it was only their third ever gig but they absolutely smashed it. I’ve known Anna the lead singer writer and visionary of the group for a few years now and I remember going to see her doing acoustic stuff at little open mic nights so it was awesome to see her screaming her little heart out on stage in front of an appreciative audience. She’s played in lots of bands (notably Hey Gravity! Who had some commercial success) but Shotgun Venus(www.myspace.com/shotgunvenus) is her baby. She is undeniably a rock godess with a long career ahead of her(i wonder if ROCK GODESS is a legitimate occupation to put on your passport?) . Also in the band is Herman who is a a bit of a rock god himself( “ the epitome of cool” as one awe struck audience member commented)-and he also fronts another great band called The Self (www.myspace.com/theselflondon)in which Anna also plays and does backing vocals. I stayed with them in Bath when they were recording at the legendary Moles Studios-I made a radio programme about them and we had lots of laughs. I am hoping hook up with them all again soon and get even more tips on how to live a truly rock and roll lifestyle-home made chutney is where it’s at apparently.
Anyway back to the night-I love going out in South London it’s so much less pretentious than East London there’s an easier atmosphere and a much friendlier vibe. I’ll be going back to Brixton on the 26th of October for Oxjam Festival.I was asked to suggest some bands for it and the organisers have selected my little brothers excellent Gypsy-jazz, blues/rock group The Rusticles(www.myspace.com/therusticles) to play an unplugged set on the windmill stage-I’m so proud.

This week I’m making a radio show about Wichita records(named after the jimmy Lee song Wichita Lineman-apparently the best song ever). They are a true indie label in the traditional sense, allowing their artists total creative freedom and not pigeon holeing them in to any specific Genre. I’ll be playing some Swedish folk from First Aid Kit some house/rock crossover from Bloc Party and even some out and out electro wonkiness from Simian Mobile Disco, plus Les Savy Favs,Sky Larkin,Clap your hands say yeah!,Peter ,Bjorn and John and Those Dancing Days and much more. Listen online at www.stroudfm.co.uk Friday 7-8pm or Tuesday 11-12pm. I’m also playing a total gem of a track by the as yet unsigned Pleasure Mob ( www.myspace.com/pleasuremob) I just can’t get their song So Hard out of my head it’s so catchy –funky, rocky, electro goodness with huge riffs and bass-heavy beats. There’s a strong 80’s influence but it’s not just a carbon copy of what’s gone before-they really are mixing it up in a new way the lead singer sounds like James Dean Caulfield(manic Street Preachers)and the intro reminded me of Duran Duran-have a listen and tell me what you think. I’m off down the bookies to place my bet on Pleasure Mob hitting the big time very soon.
