Phew from moo

Phew! Another great day at [TIME*],more great music and what a pleasure it was to meet so many hard working, talented, interesting and friendly people who dedicate their lives to independent music. There was a real sense of community and helpfulness and I would like to thank all the people I spoke to and congratulate the organizers on such a successful event. I really enjoyed myself, but I’m officially shattered now. I would have liked to have stayed to see the Japanese electro band De De Mouse but I’m afraid I’m a lightweight by that time and dinner and bed were beckoning.

I did stay to watch Uk band Talk to Angels who performed like their very lives depended on it – they said they were intending to play their best show ever and they certainly put their heart and souls in to it. Singer Craig could hardly speak in between songs because he was giving so much to every one and was really struggling for breath at a few points, yet as soon as the next track started he’d get this incedible second wind and give it his all, all over again. I spoke to Craig and Mickey who plays keyboard(formerly of Embrace) for my radio show earlier in the day and they won me over with their passion, conviction and that certain Yorkshire charm I can never resist. They told me it was their intention to evoke strong emotion and really make the audience feel something. I would say they achieved their objective , I tried to resist (cos you know I’m rock hard me) but by the last song (about heart break and being desperate and alone), even I was getting a bit choked. It was stirring stuff and only the truly hard hearted could fail to be moved by the drama, tragedy and joy . I mean who could break Craig’s heart?I just wanted to give him a big hug. An accomplished band, I’m sure you’ll be hearing more about Talk to Angels very soon.

Another stand out performance was the absolutely mental and strangely wonderful ShockOlady. A Russian glam –rock/power-pop outfit with powerful stage presence and the best actual outfits I saw all weekend. The very beautiful and totally captivating frontwoman had a kind of ball gown made from a Puffa jacket material which she whipped off to reveal a red pvc corset type affair. Kind of like a raunchy Bucks Fizz or a Eurovision Lady Ga Ga –totally out there but very entertaining, and the lyrics have stayed with me “ Get you bad ass to my bed-Rock in my Bed” Indeed! Genius.

To top it all off Phil and his wife Ginger took me to a lovely little Chinese restaurant for a delicious supper where I proceeded to tell the waitress I loved her. I got a bit muddled,my GCSE French being a bit rusty and when she asked me whether I’d put too much chilli on my noodles I said “ Non, Je t’aime”( “no I love you”) rather than “non, je l’aime” (“no, I love IT”) ,she looked a bit taken aback by the strenghth of my emotion considering we had only just met.

So, much fun has been had,I’m feeling well caffeinated(many free espressos thanks for the tip Walter),well fed, well schmoozed and well knackered. Over and out From [TIME*] 2009.

A bientot mon petits choux fleurs!

I’m writing this live from the [TIME*] event in paris and I’m certainly feeling alive after watching Cosmos 70. Cosmos 70 are a French electronic band and their sound is immense, by turns terrifying and awe inspiring, I feel like I’ve been psychicly rearranged somewhat after being immersed in the lush psychedelic sound-scapes they produce. Wow! Seriously wow! The French do electronica so well. It’s lazy journalism to compare two groups just because they come from the same country, make intensely emotive electronica and use vocoders but I did think of Air( on a diet of Dubstep and bad acid) but I can’t resist . Dark and exhilarating, all engulfing, truly music that permeates every pore and makes you feel alive . Evoking both great joy and a sense of impending doom that woke me up much more than the six espressos I’ve consumed today. Their bio says

“Voices their 1st album, gathers psychedelic tunes, tribal vocals and aerial synth layers. A tasty cosmic cocktail”

I strongly suggest buying said album turn it up loud and seeing where it takes you-if you dare!

So I’m having a good time at [TIME*] as you can probably tell. I went to a debate about the music industry in the digital age and what to do about piracy this morning. I also read an article yesterday about the anti piracy blog Lilly Allen wrote and the abuse she received which led her to taking it down. I mean Lilly had some good points but it’s an emotive subject, and she put herself up to be a target of inane vitriol-in the words of The Flight of The Conchords ‘please be more constructive with your criticism’. It’s a tricky issue but the guy from Merlin raised a good point today (it was also the only point I could understand)about offering the music consuming public more options rather than just looking at it from a legalize against file sharers point of view. I don’t really have any easy answers, have I ever file shared? Yes I have. Do I have friends in bands and in the music industry (i.e the people who are supposed to be against it) who have file shared ? Yes. I don’t want to defend file sharing and certainly not excuse me or my friends but I guess our excuse is we’ve worked so hard for so long, for no money (for the love)that we feel if anyone deserves some free tunes it’s us(hypocritical double standards-yes certainly ,I’m not proud) .When your absolutely skint ( really, really brassic!) and you love music, and everyone else is doing it it’s hard to stick to your morals sometimes. Well I don’t really want to get involved in such a contentious issue but I guess I just have- to summarize what I’m saying is really I can see both sides of the argument.

And now I can hear there’s another band starting up in the Theatre so I’m off to have a look see before the screening of Brendan Toller’s film ‘I need That Record’ in a little bit. It’s very exciting to see the HorizonVUMusic logo on the flyers here as we’re the official sponsors. Check us out!

More to come later.

Hello,

I got my new dress, got my vintage cape(I’m the only cape wearer in my town it’s a fashion crusade I’m spearheading) almost got my new shoes and I’m coming to Paris-Whoop Whoop! For the Time Indie Music event this weekend-it’s ever so exciting-I can’t wait. I’ll be

blogging from the event –LIVE! And trying to grab bands, musicians and people of musical interest for interviews and cosy chats, picking their brains for profound or random thoughts on the music biz or life in general. So stay tuned and hear first hand what I get up to, I’ll be fluttering about like a social butterfly from party to gig to discussion, blogging it all straight back to you.

I’m most looking forward to the premier of Brendon Toller’s film ‘I need that Record’ which is being premiered on the Friday night, and am (not so now) secretly fantasising that Thurston Moore ,who’s featured in the film , will be in the audience-if you’re reading this Thurston, I LOVE YOU!

It’s always the way that good invitiations come in twos and I wish I could be in two places at once this weekend as the coolest british female art-punk band I know, the mighty Wetdog are launching their second album in London. At their last album launch Mark Ronson turned up and said he’d been playing their stuff on his New York radio show. They were hand selected by Beth Ditto to support The Gossip on tour and more recently another famous fan Ari Up from the slits got them to Support the Slits UK tour dates. They’ve got an amazing aquatic video to their new single ’Lower Leg’ check it out on their myspace .

I’ve been ridiculously busy doing un-music related stuff this week. It’s been quite stressful and to unwind I’ve been playing with my new toy a BCD 3000. I downloaded the DJ software Mixxx and have been getting way less sleep than I need as I’ve been staying up playing my fantasy sets to the crowd in my head(that is the crowd in my head who think I’m a superstar DJ). I’ve been meaning to get mixing again for years (literally 10 years!) It’s much easier than mixing on vinyl which is good as I’m a little rusty to say the least. I love it though and I’m obsessed enough that I’m sure I’ll pick it back up in no time.

Songs that have made it in to the mix this week are:

  1. Larry Tee ft Princess Superstar-Licky (Herve’s remix)
  2. Wetdog-Lower Leg
  3. The Black Ghosts-Repetition Kills You
  4. The Bird and The Bee- Again and Again
  5. Kate Bush-Wuthering Heights

I’ll speak to you very soon ,

Take care

Milly Moo’s tending to other business today so I’m stepping in…she’ll be back…It’s an incredibly busy time for us as we’re gearing up for The Indie Music Event here in Paris next week-end. The team will be on hand and Moo will be blogging live from the event…very cool. Along with TIME we’re going to be launching an updated Web site, blog and YouTube Channel. More on that to come…

Good fortune came our way this week – Jenna Hill joined us as a Charter Member. In May of 2008, Jenna had the opportunity to record an EP Album at Curb Studio in Nashville. Her project features some of the top musicians in country music. It was mixed by Craig White and mastered by Hank Williams. The collection of songs includes a variety of styles featuring Jenna’s artistic capabilities. “Paradise” seems to be getting the most number of spins at HVUM, but we like all her sons. There’s a lot more to come from Jenna so we’re standing behind her and we want you to check out her music at www.myspace.com/jennahillmusic.

In response to a number of emails I’ve received asking my opinion of the CMA Awards – look friends– HVUM is an organizational member of CMA and we think the Country Music Association does a lot of good bringing country music to the world through it’s programs and events. Taylor Swift is not my favorite artist – but I don’t have anything against her. I do like Lady A, Brad Paisely, Keith Urban, Mac McAnally and a cast of other great artists.

As far as what else is going on musicwise in my office – I am really, genuinely amped over Joss Stone’s Colour Me Free…it’s been a while since her last CD (Introducing Joss Stone, 2007), but the new album is absolutely fantastic – it’s real and it’s about being real – genuine and from the heart. I have been a die-hard follower of Joss since I first heard The Soul Sessions back in 2003, and I still love that album. I was positively predisposed to Colour Me Free before I heard it. Everyone around here expected me to rave about this album, so okay, you got it – no apologies. Colour Me Free – this is Joss at her best.

Try to help someone today without being discovered!

Hello,

I have rather sore calve muscles today from too much skanking at the Bristol based Ska band, The Communicators gig last night in Stroud. I actually had a stitch at one point-not a good sign in regards to the state of my general fitness (I really need to give up smoking!) but it was a really good night . Sweaty, aching and suffering from a stitch, I was skanking away till ooh maybe eleven o’clock-crazy days. I love ska and have been really lucky this year with going to see Madness do an outdoor gig at Gatcombe park in Gloucestershire and also those other legends The Beat at Wychwood festival, I really want to see the Specials then my ska dream would be complete.

I watched a documentary on Fleetwood Mac on Friday and it’s rekindled a bit of an obsession. To the point where on Saturday I gave up usual communication and insisted on answering my boyfriend only in lyrics to Mac songs(for the sake of this exercise I also included Stevie Nicks songs).Oh no it wasn’t annoying, he loved it ! I grew up with the Mac, my Mum was a huge fan (also The Eagles, Springsteen, The Travelling Wilburys, Dire Straits etc) and I remember singing along to ‘Big Love’ on the way to my ballet lessons-the ballet was a short lived phase but my love of The Mac has endured three decades. I was struck by the huge influence Stevie Nicks incredible voice and captivating performance has had on so many modern female ‘pop-stars’ from Florence and The Machine to Destiny’s Child ( who sampled Edge Of Seventeen).I also remember Dreams being remixed as a huge clubbing anthem in my teenage raving days. What a legacy! What a band! And what a story behind it all!

I’ve been listening to another band with a pretty incredible back story, though hopefully not so much of the bed-hopping and drugs kind. Our new charter member Farris. I’m loving their song ‘We Are The Creatures’ it appeals to my love of Smashing Pumpkins, The Cure and Placebo in it’s dark discordant harmony’s and a kind of grungy/shoe-gaze feel but with a the sweetly soulful vocals of Kathleen Farris giving their sound a delicate edge. Hard to define but here’s what they say:

“Musically, FARRIS melds diverging influences of its band members including blues, latin samba, hard rock, and mellow acoustic sounds while maintaining the importance of lyrics and Kathleen’s unique, compelling voice. FARRIS’ debut release, “WE ARE CREATURES” is expected in the Spring of 2010. Four of the twelve songs directly speak about political issues including, “Heaven Chase” a gospel and reggae inspired song about the Sudanese Lost Boys escaping civil war and “The Dam” a full-on rock song which creates a metaphor between the US and a dam blocking the flow of a river. “Tu Eres mi Vida” is a world music-driven raucous ride with horns and multiple percussion sections blending many languages. Listen carefully to the remaining songs which touch on predestination, buddhism, love, death, and reincarnation including the alternative rock title-track, “We are creatures”, which highlights a philosophy that Kathleen holds dear – that we are all united under one sky.”

I await the rest of the album with excited anticipation-with such hugely varied influences in the metaphorical melding pot it’s sure to be really interesting.

Have a listen for yourself at www.reverbnation.com/farris

So I bid you farewell for now, but please drop me a comment I always love to hear from you.

Have a grand week.

Jenna was born to reach people with her voice! Raised in Greenwood, Indiana, she fell in love with singing and creating music at 8 years old. As she grew so did her passion, she began performing in her youth group and then at small venues locally. Now in her twenties she still carries with her that same vision. She is a true artist, able to capture the heart behind each and every vocal. Stay tuned for more songs that will rock your socks off. In order to give herself an opportunity to work with the best in the business, Jenna decided to take a leap of faith this January and move to Nashville. She is currently getting settled in and making plans for her future recording career. “Jenna is an amazing talent with a beautiful soul. Listen to her music. You will be moved!” – Craig White, Curb Studio Engineer.

Boo!

I just found a crucifix/guitar pendent thing on the ground outside my front door-it doesn’t belong to anyone I live with…weird. I’m inclined to believe it is some spooky omen shrouded in mysterious meaning and possibly witch-craft maybe a sign from the God’s of rock’n’roll maybe it’s some ominous warning I must heed, I’m sure it’s a good thing but Halloween has got me in a magical mood and it’s spooked me somewhat. What could it mean?

Ok. Enough of the quasi mystical random ramblings, let’s get down to business. Well, I had an amazing weekend at Walk the Line festival and I’m feeling all warm and fuzzy as everyone was so friendly and chilled yet enthusiastic and cool-an awesome balance. Many thanks to all who spoke to me and didn’t run and hide as I gently shoved my mic in people’s faces on Saturday which I know can be a bit intimidating at the best of times. It was called Walk The Line and I certainly did, walk the line, well, many lines actually from the Frog and Fiddle to D Fly to the town hall and round and round and back again. I’m the sort of person who can’t really stand still for long anyway and I love running around in the manner of a headless chicken so it suited me down to the ground. I was on a mission from God! No sorry, I mean I was on a mission from BBC introducing A mission to check out all the new and interesting bands who’d decended on Cheltenham for the weekend and interview them for Rob Champion’s Introducing show on BBC Gloucestershire.

I arrived a bit late for the discussion about the local music scene which was a shame as I’m new to the area and there was a room full of people who care passionately about music sharing ideas and experience. I’m certainly starting to feel I made the right choice in making Cheltenham my home town. There is a really lovely atmosphere here of support and helpfulness between promoters ,bands and miscellaneous muso’s all muddling together in a productive way to make things happen.

It seems to me as a newcomer that Cheltenham is full of budding young musicians and visionaries just on the cusp of bursting forth in to full bloom. It’s a really exciting feeling like spring time or Christmas eve . Events like walk the line are all about supporting the local talent as well as pulling in some really cool and unusual bands from further afield. My personal highlights were Broadcast 2000,Jim Lockey and the Solemn Sun, Oxygen Thief and of course Thrill Collins.

I had a good old chinwag with Broadcast 2000 who were so funny and nice I almost asked if they needed a Triangle player in the band so I could join them (yes, I’m quite a competent Triangle player don’t you know!) Joe Steer is the multi-instrumentalist, producer, songwriter and frontman who started the project in his bedroom until interest got so great he formed a live band comprised of talented musicians from varied backgrounds, a collective rather than a group as he put it. They’ve had some commercial success in that a couple of their songs have been used in ads but are still relatively unknown so far. I’m sure that is about to change soon as the debut album is released in 2010. They were great live, engaging and lively with beautifully crafted songs and an unusual sound.

I also spoke to the charming and ridiculously modest Jim Lockey who runs istartedthefire records and plays writes and fronts Jim Lockey and the Solemn Sun. It was apparent from the crowd’s swooning, whooping and general adoration that Jim is a local hero with an impressively devoted following . Jim is hugely talented and writes beautiful, well crafted songs with incisive poetic lyrics in a folkified indie sensibility-he’s had heaps of praise lauded on him already from people like Frank Turner (who he recently supported) amongst others .

I also spoke to Oxygen Thief a solo artist who makes an impressive noise all on his own, no need for a band. Though he doesn’t fit in to the bracket singer song writer(too guitar heavy and high energy),he doesn’t have symbols on his knees so not a one man band either. A bluesy rocking outfit made up of one Bristol based man who has the raw rock strength of many.

Walk the Line was a triumph and looks set to go to strength to strength and become as big as The Camden Crawl but without the ‘cooler than thou attitude’ and associated drug problems which can only be a good thing, we hope!

I made my radio show for Stroud FM 107.9 as usual, unusually though I played loads of classic hip hop(NWA, De La Soul) and even a bit of Drum and Bass (in your Face!) as well as some cool bands like Chromeo and Marmaduke Duke and of course my favourite unsigned gems Pleasure Mob-who incidentally have got a video for their track So Hard a crazy animation(like Daniel Johnston without medication).

My top 5 random goodness tracks of the week

  1. N.W.A-Express yourself
  2. Broadcast 2000-Your Own Worst Enemy
  3. Wet dog-Lower Leg*
  4. Jim Lockey and The Solemn Sun-Coloured Cars
  5. La Roux remixed by High Contrast -In for the Kill

*Released today!
