Sally has been successfully training singers for more than 30 years.

Sally has helped her clients heal vocal damage, expand vocal range, land a Broadway show, record their own music and tour internationally without vocal fatigue or strain.

Some of my voice students have not yet developed a vibrato. To convince these singers that ‘chasing down a vibrato’ or trying to ‘make it happen’ will never work, is the first step.

Vibrato is natural – when the voice is free to vibrate. Freeing the voice is what voice lessons ought to be all about. They certainly are when you study Sing Like You Speak.

Vibrato is a slight variation in pitch, a shimmer of overtone. You’ve heard forced vibrato also. It’s a very quick, tense with a slight variation of pitch. There’s also the warble vibrato – a slow and wide variation in pitch. Neither of these vibratos is natural. And neither will make a song sound better.

To develop a vibrato from straight tone – no vibrato – or from a ‘manufactured’ vibrato, the singer must free the voice to do its’ natural vibrating thing. As a singer develops the freedom required vibrato magic can happen.

I have a few students who are new to singing and have not yet developed a vibrato. As the voice becomes more free a slight shimmer begins to happen as a note is sustained. One student calls this ‘vibrato pixie dust’. There’s a sweetness to the sound as it begins to release.

To find your vibrato pixie dust, begin with an opening inhale to open your vocal instrument. It’s NOT about getting breath into your lungs, it’s about opening the airways and engaging the right muscles. As you sing, release the sound without any control or manipulation. No pushing, shoving or struggling allowed. Remain open and RELEASE your voice to the freedom of your natural instrument. You will begin to hear your vibrato pixie dust.

Of course, there is much more to learn about freeing your singing voice. I’m here to help sprinkle the pixie dust. I love what I do every day!
