It seems to be high time for me to spread some mystery all around: Jenn Vix and Reeves Gabrels have recently released a new track “Speed of Light” and I cannot wait to review it. But first of all, let me present you Jenn Vix and Reeves Gabrels. Jenn Vix is an artist from Providence, Rhode Island, who has managed to master practically all roles possible in a band: vocals, songwriting, bass guitar, synths, drums, lead guitar and even some programming. The music genres associated with her work are electronic, independent. Jenn released her self-titled debut album on her own label, Umbrella, in 1995 and it was reviewed in Rolling Stone magazine. Since then she has found her niche and her loyal fans. Vix’s third album, “3”, was very successful.

Reeves Gabrels – “one of the most daring rock-guitar improvisers since Jimi Hendrix”. He is famous and respected for his long partnership with David Bowie, but he has worked with many other known bands and artists from all over the world. “He is recognized for virtuosity and versatility, a guitar player who can explore sonic extremes with a great, adaptive intuition for what each song needs most.” Since 2012, he performs with The Cure. This duet creates pieces of art like the track “Speed of Light”.

The song “Speed of Light” is rather long and develops slowly and softly. It is very moody: putting the listeners into the mystic atmosphere of the space. Like other works by Jenn Vix, it is a somewhat gothic, but at the same time the guitar passages in the major scale help to create very pleasant and cosmic feelings. Some people believe that these kinds of instrumental tracks can be boring, but I can insist that it is not the case withe “Speed of Light”. It has interesting effects and back vocals, as well as the very beautiful and distinct voice of Jenn supporting the spirit of the song and making it special. I personally can put it on a replay mode and enjoy it for hours.

To sum up, I recommend that you to listen carefully to the “Speed of Light” track as it is high quality music performed by professional and respected musicians; furthermore, it is an unusual partnership so don’t miss this opportunity. Who knows, maybe it will go to the top song of your playlist.

Prepare for some great news! Yes Sir Boss has recently announced the release of “Mrs #1” (on April 15th) featuring label owner Joss Stone. This is the second single taken from their debut album “Desperation State”, that I reviewed a while back. As you know, YSB is well-known for their original and very distinct sound, catchy melodies, the front mans’ (Matt Sellors) husky voice and on-stage delivery. In this particular track we see the unique mix of this exceptional band and Joss Stone – successful soul singer, songwriter and actress with very melodic, beautiful and strong voice. Let’s check out the video.

Mrs#1 is a potion of energetic rhythm, guitar riffs and the YSB jazz horns. Vocals of both artists work very well together and that gives a great pleasure to all their fans. Matt said that he “had never intended for the song to be a duet but the addition of female vocals seemed to add clarity to the lyrics, and in a way, make the song complete.” And that is so true! The official video is an exceptional pill of enthusiasm, energy, creativity and positivism. It contains some backstage shots as well as the ones from their live show. The video is so playful and sincere that you start to feel that it was made BY friends and FOR friends. You can see that these people love what they are doing and they really enjoy singing this song. Their performance is catchy and it leaves one feeling totally happy. That seems to be the best proof of success for artists, so I advise you to see them live during this year when they’ll have a tour. Enjoy!

World, seems it’s a high time for us to forget what energy drinks are! Welcome LEAH – a new artist ready to explode onto the musical landscape. Her debut album “Of Earth & Angels” is an unpredictable mix: heavy metal – symphonic – Celtic soulful and spiritual ballads, where you can listen to the harp, the lyre, the flute, and of course, very strong, catchy and simply amazing artists’ voice.

Leah is from the Vancouver area of British Columbia, Canada. She has been writing since she was a teenager playing the guitar and piano. During her teenage years she listened to various music: gospel, blues, R&B, even The Doors, The Beatles and Mariah Carey. People say that she sounds like a “heavy metal Enya” or as “Loreena McKennitt with distortion” but in some interviews Leah tells us that one of her favorite bands include Lacuna Coil, Nightwish, Epica, Within Temptation, Leaves’ Eyes, After Forever and so on. We definitely can find some parallels between these bands’ music and LEAH’s style but at the same time, she has gone much further and filled out these styles with Celtic melodies and personal input – feelings, voice, music and lyrics. Personally, I note that her music has many “layers”. The back vocals are very well developed and help her to create a truly full sound.

The band members are Leah – singer/songwriter, David Hughes – guitar, Sean Lang (from First Reign) – drums, Britton Liakakos – bass. Leah has been a part of other bands: mostly in small garage bands, but she has been with Ashur- a more known metal band. She is, by the way a home-sitting mother, managing to combine development of her musical career and personal life at the same time. “Of Earth & Angels” is not a “made in a hurry” album. Leah has spent 2 years to complete the album. She already had several songs written, so it was difficult even to choose the right ones and write the missing tracks in order to create a complete album in all senses.

The album begins with very strong and serious sounds of high-heeled shoes, guitar passages, and then it bursts into a classical and very well done metal track with orchestral parts, choir and outstanding back vocals that make it mysterious and tempting. So this intro track is called “Prisoner” about being in a hard situation of despair because of your own thoughts that you cannot escape. The second track is in my personal top of this album. It is called “Remember”- a highly professional track that I strongly believe can easily compete with best tracks of this music style. The song has easy-to-remember lyrics, a clear and catchy chorus and beautiful and logic melody. Leah’s voice sounds so soft, innocent and strong at the same time, and the music gives life and pure energy to this song. She has managed to show her wide musical diapason and create a real piece of musical art. The track reaches its hottest point practically at the end with the words “I’m reaching so deep, I cannot breathe” – that’s the moment when you understand that you need to listen to this track ten times more in order to get maximum pleasure from it.

“Old World” is one of the outstanding songs with Celtic touch. Great mix of brutal guitar sounds and truly metal passages, solo, gothic vocals, playful and jocular flute and well measured drums. This folky song is followed by “I Fade”, a very oriental song at the beginning in all senses that turns out to be a surprise of the album. While being played, it develops as a Eastern melody integrated into Leah’s powerful, metal song style. Its lyrics are touching and deep, “It is about the psychology of death and pain. The “art of grief”. The middle the album is a presentation of “calmer” songs like “Ex Cathedra” which is more reticent but still has a hidden power inside that we can feel through guitar party and chorus. “Ocean” is a very atmospheric ballad that shows us a new side of the artist that wasn’t that much shown before. Pure and frank track with beautiful melody and accurate singer’s work with all sounds.

“A Thousand Years” has continuesto follow the chosen direction and as well isa very tuneful and deep song. There is one track that sounds like an unbelievable song of elves in couplet that shows a unique ability of Leah to create such kinds of effects and is very metal and rocky in chorus. “Mainland” is an arguable and many-sided track in which everyone will manage to find something interesting for them. Two of the three last songs of the album “Say yes” and “Illusion” are considered to be the most personal as they were written about six years ago when Leah was writing songs mostly for herself, and now they have an extra value for listeners. We can feel the difference and progress in her music. The song in between – “Confess My Love” has good lyrics telling the story of a broken heart, but not soul and spirit. It is written in a rock style and fits well in the track list. The last song “Illusion” has a strong message in it, and it sums up the last tracks and completing the whole idea of the album.

I would definitely suggest you to listen to this album; especially its top tracks. I’m sure that when you start with first three songs-they will enslave your attention till the very end. Let’s definitely wait for LEAH’s future projects that are sure to be even more interesting and exciting for listeners. You can already find her latest EP “Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence” that includes three songs! All in all, Great job to the whole LEAH’s band!

Hello everyone! Let’s listen to something new and energetic! Welcome “a 6 piece band with an original, distinct and indefinable sound, created from a multitude of worldly musical and cultural influences”-Yes Sir Boss (YSB) – Matt Sellors, Luke Potter, Tom First, Jehan Abdel-Malak, Josh Stopford and Ruben Nimmo. This Bristol-based band combines many styles and musical instruments forming their unique personal identity in the music world. Their songs are truly original with distinct and full sound with elements of everything from a brooding Balkan blues band to a horn injected indie rock outfit.

Not to be overlooked in considering their success are the singers’ voices and, of course, their on-stage delivery. YSB has recently completed a 40 date summer tour playing numerous headline slots at many of the UK’s leading festivals and appearing on various radio shows including live sessions for BBC Radio London and Rob Da Banks Radio 1 show. More recently, they’ve been touring throughout in Europe. We can be sure of one thing – it won’t take much time for YSB to become mainstream. They have opened for Joss Stone’s ‘Soul Session’s 2 Tour’ lined up across Europe. This experience no doubt strengthens the band’s presence on stage and the exposure will surely grow their fan base.

Talking about their music more specifically, their debut album “Desperation State” was released on the 24th September in France and on 8th October in the U.K. The album will be available throughout all of Europe by February 2013. To start you off, I want to suggest highlights of the “Desperation State” CD. One of the brightest songs is “Not Guilty”- an absolute hit, very stylish, extravagant, rhythmic and catchy. It ‘s very easy to remember the melody and you can enjoy singing with YSB.

I think it’s clear that videos are extremely important for artists, but at the same time, they can be too tricky. The music video that supports this track is highly creative, exciting and provocative. It’s a perfect fit with the lyrics and band’s style. I recommend that you to check out their “Never Know” vid. Their live-like video gives you a chance to see all members of the band in “real life”. It’s a kind of concert performance, but with good quality sound at the same time. In discovering the video you’ll get a wonderful feeling of street artists performing purely for the love of music. These people enjoy playing and singing their songs. The energy easily transfers to their listeners.

Is it a good time to talk about the “Desperation State” song that gives the album its title? – for sure it is! Grotesque, memorable, eccentric – it’s a song that catches our attention through wind instruments at the front along with strong the energetic voice of frontman Sellors. In my view, the outstanding song from the “Desperation State” album is “My My”. the track is slow, romantic and very inviting at the beginning moving toward a temerarious solo at the end. All in all, the song is complete from all sides and in all senses.

I call your attention to the song performed by YSB together with Joss Stone – “Mrs #1”. The voices of these different and very talented artists on this song give a wonderful mix and unbelievable effect. It’s a great present to all fans and lovers of their music. I think you’ll enjoy the new album of Yes Sir Boss and I suggest that you get out and see them live! They are young, energetic, and they manage to cope with rather difficult musical styles and rhythms incorporating wind instruments – surprising their listeners. What can I say..best wishes for the band!

Hot summer days in Paris! Welcome to everyone who never forgets music – even while having a sunstrocke) Let’s take a listen and look to a great artist discovering some of her best songs – Andrea Soler!

Andrea is an Australian singer-songwriter with a spicy blood-mix of Spanich and French roots. She is an experienced artist having two albums and numerous concerts and festivals to her name. Her band has performed at last year’s renowned Woodford Folk Festival, Dorrigo Folk Festival, Mullum Music Festival and has also won ABC North Coast Artist of The Week, ‘Female Vocals’ and ‘World Music’ categories at The 2010 North Coast Music Industry Awards in Australia. More recently, she became a 2012 Music Oz Awards Finalist. “Her music evokes the tradition of the troubadour with a beguiling joie de vivre taking the listener on a journey through the realms of indie folk, jazz, roots and world music.”

Andrea has a unique mix of various music styles and streams with a velvet voice that turns out to be a ‘cherry on the cake’. She is very passionate on the stage, so never lose any opportunity to see her live concert! The audience is always covered by her calm, rhythmic music tracks as well as her sunny smile and charming presence. Andrea manages to hold a crowd without being loud: real music from a true artist can attract people with a high level of professionalism, its clarity and beauty.

“My passion is to share my joy of music and life!” – she says and proves it through her own songs. One of the most positive examples is “Daydreamer” which comes with a recently created video clip. It tells a story of a girl whose biggest talent is to dream! Listeners can relate – the track parallels with self-reflection – while listening to this sunny and warm melody. The video suits the lyrics of the song. It’s very creative and exciting at the same time: lots of balloons, smiles, lights, surprises -everything that one might, well, dream about!

Andrea’s first album, the fourteen track, “Earth On An Axis” shouldn’t be missed. “Waiting For The Moon” is a romantic song with very beautiful melody, catchy rhythm, and marvelous vocals. It’s a calm and pleasant track showing another side of Andrea’s soul. One of the most interesting songs for me turned out to be “The Flowers”. It has its own very many-sided and peculiar character. The guitar solo and long pauses makes it unique, reticent and penetrating. The lyrics are structured so to create a picture in our mind. “I leaved the flowers on the table with a lonely chair in the

corner”. This first line instantly brings listeners into her world. “Earth On An Axis” the namesake track is rhythmic in the spirit of her minimalist folk-roots base, and it’s an active song with some gentle jazz accents. Here you’ll also find some melancholy in Andrea’s words about her home country, Australia.

People of so various music preferences and tastes can find something interesting and pleasant for themselves in her music, different tracks. She has been on her European “Daydreamer” tour with guitarist James Ross all summer. If your in Paris, I advise you to use an opportunity and visit at least one of Andea’s upcoming concerts!

“Do not miss any opportunity to see Andrea Soler play live. This Australian singer-songwriter has brought a much needed helping of antipodean warmth and manages to blend so many rhythms and ideas, emotions and moods into her music. A brilliant, imaginative original artist.” Ian Peterson – LIVE WIRE, UK.

Morning the World! Spring is practically over and everyone is waiting for sunny summer – enthusiastic as never before! But, of course, we don’t forget our best friend-music-so I’m writing about “Songbird”, the new album release from Chantelle Barry. This new release is light and “transparent” for listeners – ideal music for those who want to find their zen and melt in the spirit of spring and freedom. The “Songbird” album brings smiles and a positive mood. I strongly recommend this CD for travelers wanting to enjoy the vibes from summer weather and calm music.

Chantelle is an Australian singer-songwriter and actress. She started her career in music, and since, has (in addition to her music) been very involved in television and film. She has won numerous awards and earned fame in across media. She won POPSTARS Australia in 2000, got 1st Place in the UK Songwriting Contest for her song “You”, Top 5 Finalist in Songwriting Universe “Song Of The Month” contest, a 1st and 3rd place in the Song of the Year songwriting contest and Top 10 in the Music Nation online music competition. More than that, she received a “best song” nomination in the Hollywood Music in Media Awards for “Love Someone”!

Her career as an actress is successful, but her heart belongs to music. She released her first solo album “Simple Things” in 2009. Its popularity inspired Chantelle to record “Songbird”, written in Pop-Folk style. The thirteen track album is a mix of brand new, and well-known songs. It starts with “Better in Twos” a song that sets apart the personality of singer and delivers a strong message to listeners of the albums’ spirit and ideas. “Better in Twos” is followed by very light song called “Fly Away” inspiring us to think less about everyday chores and problems in order to follow adventures. One of the highlights of this album is the track “Love Someone”. It’s full of emotions and feelings. This song has been praised by both listeners and critics.

“None of Yours” and “Take a Walk With Me” are very different from each other, but the combination of the two brings about a sense of being complete. The positive wave shifts to the slow, melodic and simply pleasant “Day by Day”. I was surprised by “ Like You Do”. It’s a track that brings a bit of the Pacific islands to mind with sound elements of island guitar and ukulele to spread the spirit of holidays and peace that I personally like a lot. Another track delivering some of the same uplift is “You”- the reggae-style chorus helps us feel the sun even while we’re in our flats and offices!

“Drive” differs from all the other tracks. It is a song with fantastic energy and very melodic sound. Chantelle’s mild voice brings sensitivity and feminine mildness. The last track on the album is “I Remember”. It will melt you to the end. Totally peaceful and harmonious, the song leaves a pleasant footprint in our hearts.

I strongly recommend this album, as well as earlier recordings from this talented musician. For everyone who is looking for summer-style songs with meaning and true quality, “Songbird” is the CD. These songs bring the sun and smiles supporting the holidays. And not to worry, when the time comes, the music will warm you up on a cold winter evening! Enjoy Chantelle Barry’s “Songbird” and if you can catch her live – go for it!

Attention! New star on the stage!

Let me present a band that totally conquered my heart – Tarah Who! It is a band that consists of French citizens but these people can for sure be called big travelers- they are making records in LA, USA and give concerts all around Europe and the U.S.

What kind of style do they prefer? Rock-pure and unbeaten! I have had a big pleasure to listen to their records, but to see them live – twice in March 2012. I also had a unique opportunity to talk to members of the band a for HorizonVU Music! But let’s go step-by-step.

To begin with, Tarah Who?’s albums sound very confident and attract the listeners’ attention from the first second. I’ve enjoyed both their old tracks and new ones. They have very melodic songs, highly-professional and well-balanced sound, but what is really catchy about them is the voice of Tarah G., the lead singer and guitarist. Tarah G. has a incredibly strong vocals, real passion and energy about everything that she’s doing.

The band has recently gone through some changes – welcoming some new members adding fresh blood to their music. Talking about their music more

specifically, I’m recommending some songs that I found really catchy and interesting, especially for new-listeners. As for me, most of them are even in the list of my top tracks for this spring!

The song “In my Mind” that starts the album “In a Rush” helps us to understand what to expect from it: great sound, many hits and catchy melodies, energy, strong vocals and half an hour of rock pleasure! It is one of the top listened songs of Tarah Who? Another great surprise of this album is “Unbalanced” – the song that has its own style and rhythm. It is rather easy to remember the lyrics and melody so you can become its fan very fast. The top song of Tarah Who? is “In a Rush” the album’s namesake. You can already feel its importance.”Our Story” stands out. It is something more personal, even private. It is written in the style of country mixed with calm classical rock. I’d for sure recommend the last song on “In a Rush” album called “Happy” – it shows off the character and strong soul of this band.

As was mentioned before, I had managed to be present at two their recent concerts. The first one was at “L’OPA” Bastille where Tarah Who? played on the same stage with The Kennedys and Hannah Judson. It was a great performance with sound on max, so all listeners could enjoy the pure rock songs of this band. At the same time, a bit later, I was surprised at the other other concert where Tarah and Pilal (drummer in Tarah Who) played the same songs but in the unplugged version. I can say that both concerts were of the highest quality and totally satisfied my demans for music. I strongly believe, that both the electric and the acoustic versions are worthy of attention. The face and sense change according to the performance.

The interview that I made before one of the concerts was really very exciting: all members of the band are very pleasant, openhearted and open-minded. Each member already has years of experience, but still they are are kind and eager to communicate. I found out that the band is closely connected to another band called “So Was The Sun”-they share a guitarist (Palem). Tarah G. likes pure and old school rock like Foo Fighters. Today the members of the band are working to adapt as musicians to each other. They have rather different musical tastes, but they all share the objective of generating energetic, rock, “ I want us to have fun and our fans to party with us!”. It’s an interesting direction to go and one of their latest songs “Rainy Days” a great example of the unique collaboration of talented people and their ideas. Check out the vid.

At the end of the interview I asked each member of the band two words: one that they like and other they hate. Here’s the response that I got:
Tarah: 1.music/karma
2. impossible
Pilal: 1. Sun
2. Duty
Palem: 1. Sonic
2. Weakness
Sam: 1.Defeat
2. Particularly

I’m really pleased to announce to all fans of Tarah Who? as well as those who would like to explore this band are welcome to join the band in concert “In The Mood(‘s) for Rock” on 11th May! It will be a unique event with many bands to participate so I’d strongly encourage and recommend everyone to be there!!!

“The story of Pete and Maura Kennedy’s personal and professional relationship, now in its second decade, is somewhere between fate and a fairy tale.” -The Kennedys Biography www.kennedysmusic.com

After listening to their Retrospective album many people would for sure agree with such a wonderful quote. The Kennedys is an American folk-rock band that is built on country music traditions. In live performances, Maura plays the acoustic guitar and the ukulele, Pete is using not only both of those, but he even plays an electric sitar. The band has more than 15 years of experience, and now, 10 great albums.

Today, what I am highlighting, is their big present to all their fans – the new CD that features songs from their entire career! Very mild and positive music, soft sounds and pleasant melodies – sometimes it really makes us smile. We find peace and enjoy life. The album starts off with “Half a Million Miles”, an openhearted song that closely connects to the couples’ career and life. The songson the CD flow like a narrow mountain river – they are active, they move, but at the same time the tracks are “not in a hurry”.

Like their sound, The Kennedy’s lyrics are pleasant, peaceful and endless. “Breath”, the fourth track, has a very different style – very catchy. And right after, the “Midnight Ghost” brings us to to the world of Country.

As for my own taste, I found that “9th Street Billy”, “Matty Groves” and “Shadows With The Lonely” deserve some special attention. Listening to them really gives you understanding as to how these musicians have mastered combining different styles and rhythms.   As a result, they manage to surprise first-time listeners, and without doubt, please long-time followers. The album shows off the many-sides of The Kennedys and one fully grasps why they command the respect of colleagues and love of fans.

Special thanks for the very sensitive, pure and melodic “Angels Cry”. The track stands out from the whole album. The song itself has very strong story, sense, and power. I strongly recommend The Kennedy’s Retrospective album to people who appreciate and seek harmony, peace and positive emotions. Great musicians-marvelous CD!

Don’t miss an opportunity to listen to their live performances!

Today on the rock horizon we have a the latest release from Bob Dee with Petro called “Up All Night”! Bob and the band are known and loved by many fans around the world due to their recognizable sound, respect of rock traditions and passion that’s always a part of their tracks. The album features Bob Dee (singer/guitarist), Brian Bauers (bass), TJ Jordan (guitarist) and Scott Campbell (drums). It seems to be inspired by the success of previously released songs “Summertime”, “Mother Says” and “Take My Hand”. The band has created a fulfilling and many-sided CD in “Up All Night”. The album can be compared with a good book where you can laugh at some parts, but feel sad or delighted by others.

The track list starts with a very memorable and rhythmic song “Tell Me” setting the tone for the others to follow. From the first second you become addicted to its melody and lyrics – especially of the chorus. “Tell Me” is followed by a melodic “Stars” and a dramatic story of “Lips That Heal”. This latter song is full of emotions and authors’ passion that can be easily felt. For me, “Up All Night” is the real highlight of the album. The song is written in best traditions of rock with all corresponding guitar passages, sound specificities and real drive of singer and musicians. This track for sure should be in list of top songs for true rock lovers (votarists). Don’t fail to notice that album includes a bonus track “All American Boys” that is a tribute to US troops. The song is inspiring and active – and it’ is a great last page of this “book”.

All in all, this album, “Up All Night”, can be considered sets a high-standard, with a good range of songs and styles. The CD can be liked by people of different musical tastes and preferences. Special thanks to Bob with Petro and good luck with future projects!
