This week’s column is a contrast piece between two talented Indie musicians, Abbie Rhode and Adaline. Abbie was born
Abbie Rhode
and raised in the extremely small town of Virginia City, Montana. She became very interested in music at a young age – she always told her parents how she dreamed to be a star. She began by writing songs when she was in the fifth grade and decided to take up guitar when she was thirteen. Abbie’s main influences are her family, loving friends and the Beatles. Being an indie musician takes much dedication and passion. Abbie demonstrates that through her will and love for music. She defines herself through the words of her music.
Adaline
Adaline, on the other hand, expesses a very different experience growing up with music. From pulsing rock, to cabaret, to orchestral ballads, she creates meticulously crafted sound scapes where brass, strings, and vibraphone meet electric guitars and programmed percussion. Classical and pop sensibilities produce soundtracks that are both artistic and accessible.
Both of these musicians embody the characteristics of what it means to be independent, wholehearted and original. They believe in the power of song writing and what it means to entirely represent them. Just like a song taking creativity and input from one’s true character, their personal style makes for their individuality and careers as a musician.
From the pictures of both musicians, one is able to see their sense of style and who they are appearing as, as a person. Abbie carries herself with her curly locks and that can represent a laid back independent style. Adaline
on the other hand is seen with many looks from different outfits to different hair styles. She is seen dressing both up and down. On stage, she stays casual with her tees versus dressing up with dresses and heels.
Achieving Adaline’s look is pretty simple. One can go to any store of their choice and find some simple cut shirts with any sleeve type. They can be a solid colour or have a desired print to them. Jackets can be good too. From leather, to a simple nice denim, it works with the look all according to what it is paired with. As far as bottoms go, skinny jeans, boot cut jeans or leggings work. The styles and colour will reflect on the shirt and jacket and what one 
thinks looks best and what they feel comfortable in. Also, simple dresses work really well with look as it can be dressed up or down by basic shoes and/or accessories. Shoes are very open ranges as well. Tall boots, to heels, to flats, it all works! Another great way to achieve this look is through accessories! One can wear something a little more bulkier to achieve a more loud look versus something more simple which still makes the look, but in a more simplistic way. So you see, anyones look can be recreated in a simple and affordable way. Anyone is able to achieve not only the look, but any musician’s look at an affordable price. It is about strategies and creativity. It does not mean buying the exact article of clothing, rather manipulate and find something similar that fits both the look and your own personal style. Along with her clothes, one thing Tawnie always keeps handy is her guitar. You can replicate this look – make it your own; add some personal style to it. Make yourself unique and the eye catcher. Many stores will carry this type of clothing. One can get any kind of graphic t-shirts or plaid shirts. Even v neck shirts fall under this category of dressing. Perhaps even an oversized black see through blouse or an oversized sweater shirt. As far as jackets go, leather jackets are 100% acceptable. They complete this look and add that final touch of edginess. Jackets with collars and button ups also work. It really depends on personal preference and what jumps out at you. Now for bottoms…anything will work! From a black skirt with ripped panty hose and nice combat boots to skinny jeans and converse to leggings and leather boots…there is so much variety! No matter what, it is hard to make an outfit look bad. Have fun when you are putting it together because that is what matters. Tawnie is seen in several outfits and she dresses to how she likes. Anyone who wants her style can do it, especially since it is very affordable as well. It is absurd to buy high ticked items just because it is brand name. Of course sometimes it is ok for some items, but buying things at an affordable price and still looking great sounds so much more rewarding and worth your money. Also, what you choose to purchase does not need to be exactly what Tawnie wears, just by trying to “tweak” her style you can make it unique. Have fun, and remember, Tawnie is about her individualism and you are too!
Hannah Judson is a musician who has not been sitting still. She has travelled widely, and has worked with a range of musicians, from classical, folk, punk and grunge. Like her music, her style draws on multiple influences. She is relaxed, calm and projects intellect, creativity, and openness one might associate with New England artists. Her original style reflects her personality – right on target. She is always providing her fans and listeners with something new and creative.
Travel has always been important to Hannah. In Vienna she “wrote her earliest songs, painted, learned German, drank coffee, and smoked, inhaling deeply.” She worked her way through Morocco, hitchhiked north through Spain, and ended up on her feet in Holland. There she had an epiphany in the Van Gogh museum that it was time to get serious. She moved to Boston and got a job with a book publishing company. After about 18 months working in a cubicle, she had another epiphany, and headed back to Europe, this time to San Sebastian, Spain. There she got a classical guitar studied Spanish classical guitar with a Basque teacher, danced in bars, and continued writing her own music.
very feminine side where she loves to dress up. From wearing dresses to her “insane show collection” to her nity gritty masculine side. She pulls off both looks like no other because for her, it’s effortless and that is all as a result to her confidence of being herself.
She King recently went on tour in Halifax and Windsor. Performing she says is phenomenal and there aren’t any words to describe it. She becomes like a whole new Shawnee when she is on stage. It is like nothing else matters, no one can break her. The show is about chaos and thrill. She is a true born entertainer who truly only wants to express her love and passion for music. Even if all she did was play an acoustic guitar and sang for 5 people and all those people like it, that would be good enough for her. An important message that Shawnee wants to make - just be you. For her, she feels that if it wasn’t for that, she would not be where she is today. With anything you do, there is always going to be somewhere telling you that you are not good enough or no, try this and that shouldn’t matter. What matters is knowing what you have to offer is good enough regardless what others have to say. She tries to encourage that it doesn’t matter what people say, but what you do and it is your confidence and the belief in yourself that allows one to succeed.
has more of a laid back/edgy style. Allie on the other hand is settle and soft. For Laura, a loose solid colour tops whether they are tanks or long sleeves. That allows for both a laid back and edgy look. Also, oversized stylish sweaters and cardigans will allow achieving a look like hers. For Allie, tank tops of any neckline and colour/print are very nice and can be warn either alone or paired with a nicely cut jacket or cardigan. For Laura, leather jackets and edgier
looking trench coats really accent the outfit. Cut and style are very important and something to consider because they can either bring out ones features in a positive or in a negative way. The jackets and shirts are not all to an outfit. The bottoms are a huge factor as well. For both artists, jeans can be worn. Laura would be seen more in skinny jeans where Allie would be seen in bothdepending on the rest of her outfit. Leggings are definitely a piece that can be worn by not only them but anyone because they are very simple and versatile for any outfit and any season. On that note, even though an outfit is made of those components, accessories and footwear are what tie all the pieces together and they provide a nice touch. Long and simple necklaces are very nice, along with a simple ring and earrings. Now, when it comes to footwear, they both can wear similar styles. Tall boots whether they are leather or not can be paired with an outfit. They can be black grey or tan. Those three colours are neutral and will go with anything. A simple flat can be worn as well. An outfit is made up of many factors and even though it may seem complicated or expensive, it is really not. Anyone can achieve not only these two artists looks but any with an inexpensive budget.
one is able to achieve the Americana look that Christine Ohlman possesses. Katrin on the other hand is much different. Her style consists of a natural colour scheme and perhaps closer to pastel colours. From tanks to tee-shirts or even long sleeved, anything along neutral colours will provide this look. One could even chose to wear a country print! As far as bottoms go, any type such as jeans, skirts or shorts can be worn. A boot cut pair of jeans would probably be best inperhaps a wash jean. Next comes the jackets! Jean jackets are definite! But even leather one will work. A simple brown leather jacket will add an endgier look where jean will give it more of a country look. Now, even though this makes an outfit, accessories and footwear are very important as well. Belts and scarves add a nice touch. The jewellery that Katrin is
seen wearing is more simple chunky meets bulky and it completes an outfit! The footwear can be anything really. Leather boots or a simple flat work depending on the rest of the outfit. Given the above, it is evident that these two artists are very different in terms of their style. Remember that if you want more of a brighter statement, go for Christine’s look. But if you want something more quiet, stick with Katrin’s style. Each of the artist’s style represents a part of them selves and makes a powerful statement. One thing to never forget is that anyone can achieve this look on a budget and to just have fun with it. Add a part of yourself to it because – no one can rock you better then you!
Being Indie means to be Independent and separate you from everyone. It is about incorporating yourself and no one can does that better then you, of course. It is about self expression and originality. Sometimes that is what allows the artist to connect themselves with their music. They are not pretending to be anyone else and no one else matters. The best kind of music is the music that’s real and true to an artist. With both Amy’s and Emily’s look, they are so similar, yet very different. Amy is more of a soft hipster – Indie meets nature and Emily has more of an edgy hipster Indie look. There are a lot of people out there who look up to these artists and would like to manipulate their look. The only problem many people will face are the expenses, but what people do not stop to think about is that it can be done in an affordable way. The best way to replicate a look is to obviously dress how
that desired artist would, but to also add your own twist and personality into it.
style and colour can allow for different effects to an outfit. Next are bottoms! Leggings are a piece that can both by both of these artists as they are very versatile and go with a lot of things. Emily would be seen wearing more skinny jeans in perhaps a grey wash or just a darker colour and that gives more of an edgier look. Amy would wear either boot cut or skinny, but simpler looking jeans. Dresses are
also very good for both looks. They are very versatile and accessorized properly can fit any type of look that not only these artists have but any. Now for some of the final touches to an outfit! The foot wear and the accessories! Any artists should have a generous and fair amount of both these things as they really make and complete an outfit. Both Amy and Emily could wear leather boots of different style and colour, though Emily would probably stick to more buckle type boots. Even a flat shoe fits both looks as there are so many styles that can work with different outfits. Now, the accessories are definitely an item to have fun with. Amy would be seen more with a simple piece or if she wants to go more bold, a bigger and chunkier piece of costume jewellery. Emily though, would probably stick to simpler pendants. One of her known pieces of accessories is her scarves. They can be worn all year round. Given the above, there are many ways to accomplish different looks and all of these items can be bought in local stores and they do not have to be designer. After all, no one can see the label that is inside the short or pair of pants. So remember when shopping have fun and be brave. Try new things and create something unique for yourself!

In achieving any look, many people, including new artists may be concerned about the cost. You can attain the Pop/Rock look like Ann’so, without expensive clothing. All it takes is going to the store and seeing what works by manipulating your desired style. The Pop/Rock look is all about edginess, as demonstrated by Ann’so herself. Be creative with this look and you’ll rock it. For starters, the shirts can vary to many styles. From loose to fitted shirts or tanks. It all goes. Perhaps even try corseted shirts like like Ann’so has. They fit the look very well and add a sort of sexiness as well. For bottoms- skinnies! Skinnies! Skinnies! They are a piece that any pop/rocker should own many pairs of! They signify this look in so many ways! They are trendy and the different textures and fabrics add different feels to the outfit as well. Okay, let’s take time out and ROCK…Ann’so M ”Je ne veux pas etre celle”!
swaying tops would most definitely work for this look. For the Indie look, tanks or loose off the shoulder tops would definitely work. Flattering simple dresses fit this look as well, as they are soft and sweet. All these do not have to be just one solid colour, but could have some trendy prints. Also one thing to stress, is the shirts do not have to be skin tight to be very flattering and tasteful. These pieces can also be paired with any jean or pair of leggings. Cardigans are pieces that everyone should own-in many styles, textures, prints and colours as well. Accessories and footwear are big components to any fashion. Leather boots add edginess or casualness to an outfit depending on ones choice of style of colour. Flat shoe is also good for this look as it adds a sense of simplicity. Every one including Indie artists should have a wife range of variety of accessories. Samantha is seen wearing chunkier and bulkier jewellery, but she chooses to mix it with simpler pieces as well. Her taste in jewelry is more vintage and will add a really nice touch to an outfit. So, if you wish to achieve a very Indie and fashionable look like Samantha go for it! But remember to include your own self-expression. Be sure to have fun with it and when wearing it, strut with confidence!

depending on what mood or style you wish to try, pick what fits to that! Layer a dress and a jacket with leggings or perhaps just a simple top with a pair of them. Jackets play a big role in an outfit also. She is seen wearing many different styles. From Short to blazer cut to very long. They are also not your typical monochromatic colours, as they are to be in colour. Not only that, but they are also of different textures. So when you go to pick out an jacket to go with your very trendy outfit, try velvet or sued or even corduroyed material. The texture will definitely add a nice touch to the outfit. Finally, the outfit is almost complete! All you need are a nice choice of accessories and shoes. In achieving Maura’s look, accessories add that final touch. She wears much simpler jewellery such as a pearl necklace or jut a simple chain with a pendant on it. Simple costume jewellery will work the best for this look!
